The Kitchen
by
Susanne Morning

Arguments percolate
in steaming mouths.
Tongues worn thin and sharp
scour the kitchen’s silence.
“EQ of a hotdog” she’d said
“Birdbath for a brain” he’d replied.
He watches her eyes come to the boil.
She slashes her toast into soldiers.
Accusing fingers lay pointing at him.
Eggs for breakfast,
everything scrambled.
He remembers mornings
sunny side up.
