Holding Up Progress
by
Mike Amado

Suppose red hands take history,
rewrite it like a parody song,
bulldoze it with new highways,
synthesize it like AIDS . . .

cast you, the "victors" in bronze
like statues in front of museums,
see your ragged form dangle
on the edge of conclusion at the last
World's Fair . . .

then Lady Liberty will bear a Peace Pipe,
your trail of tears will bring water parks
to Iraq, Franklin coon cap will be
a Smithsonian relic . . .

Suppose we litter you with treaties
and break you with trash.
Would the hinges of history
swing to an open door?

Editing always warrants approval
and a tear from the corner of the eye.
Imagine if we find that video
and rewind it,
hear that tape and erase it;
find that camera
and re-shoot the whole move?
