Gunslinger's Blues
by
Patrick Julian Cassidy

I am
a gunslinger
walking at
high noon
whistling a
Muddy Waters
tune
digging deep
into the
abandoned ruins
of the
Mayan tombs
searching for
the answers
to the fears
I’ve had
since emerging
from the womb
which will
surely bring
my doom
unless addressed

six gun resting
on my hip
south side lingo
pouring out
of my lips
trying my best
to whip
that ancient
Spirit
that dwells
within me
into shape

with my gun hand
under
extraterrestrial command
playing with
the fairies
like Peter Pan
evoking the name
of Jesse James
I walk
the street
defending your honor

Bast,
the Goddess
of the lions
I kneel before Thee
and then take aim
wearing the rain
as my
badge of fame
