The Kites, The Mountaineers
by
Oliver Rice

Deep in the repositories, the museums,
among the artifacts, the curios ---
the automatic cameras panning the plazas,
the years having no scenario ---

deep in the libraries, the universities,
about the stacks, the quadrangles ---
the submarines playing their war games,
the cats righteous in their accusations ---

deep in the law, the fourth estate,
alert to the nature, the deeds of humanity ---
    the myths cruising the freeways,
the cattle rubbing against the monoliths ---

deep in the psyches of capacious persons,
acute for the verities, the aspirations ---
the worst case as probable as the best,
the rainbows denying their physics ---

enlightenment waits, lucid, courageous,
ascending with the kites, the mountaineers ---
the ids nostalgic for the caves,
        the landscapes speaking their mantras.
