Beggars squat in pungent doorways
stretching their arms like signals
to passers by,
they plead their dirt and poverty
with eye to eye contact;
delicately they curve and shape
their hands into human bowls,
long accusing fingers
become coils of living clay,
a craft converted
into the begging bowl.
