A Matter of Weight
by
Barbara Novack

It grows, not solidity,
but a flaccid broadening,
a looseness, oozing
from the borders
over the sides, rolling
outward.
A center line, like a stick,
casts a mind-thin shadow
circling around
with the passing time
until its farther edge traces
a Buddha base
of abundance.
On such pillow softness we dream
restful ease and comfort, but
we worship The Gaunt One, The Sufferer.

Sin has a broad base, too.
