Dressing Room
by
Mary Bonina

Last year's clothes unpacked,
no longer suitable, yet perfectly fine
for some other body, better
for my thinner sister maybe.

Mother and her bedroom transformed:
we're in the dressing room at Sak's
or Macy's and it's for her to decide
who looks good in what and call the sale.

“Oh get that! It looks great on you.”
She is as excited as a young girl,
younger even than her daughters,
wanting, too, to try something on,
to be beautiful once again.

Turning right
turning left
at the mirror admiring how it fits,
the sweater soft and cheery pink.
“Perfect.”
