Today When I Awake
by
Robert K. Johnson
too early, my swarm of hulking fears--
squatters in me I can never oust--
stand ready to use the night-dark room
to quickly storm, overwhelm my mind.

                                        But the window shows--
behind my yard's black blot of trees--
a sky, dawn calm, begin to glow;
gifts me a heightening hint of gold

that promises, as it slowly widens,
to define the greening leaves' curved tips,
the thinnest twigs, each blade of grass--
a whole army of tangibles
to help me be fearless all day long.
